The Gateway Trio was the successor to the Gateway Singers, which was a folk group that was organized by Jerry Walter in 1956. When the Singers disbanded in 1961 Walter formed the Gateway Trio with Betty Mann and Milt Chapman. Mann, a Montana-born country singer sang and played guitar while Chapman, born in San Francisco, sang and played bass. Walter played banjo. The group toured in the USA and Canada before disbanding in 1965.
