Throughout the Second World War, inside of the concentration camps there was a huge amount of execution and torture. But the SS guards forced the prisoners to work incredibly hard, and the camps had a policy known as 'Extermination Through Labour.' The prisoners were kept in a constant state of starvation and they were forced to conduct hard labour and hundreds of thousands of people were killed through the work they were forced to do.
If a prisoner was said to have not been working hard enough then they could have been shot on the spot by SS guards such as Irma Grese. It was ruthless, and inside some of the most barbaric camps such as Mauthausen prisoners were forced to work inside the quarries where they had to walk up the Stairs of Death many times a day.
