Out of all of the ‘natural’ induction methods (pineapple core, red raspberry leaf tea, hot curries and so on), sex is usually the only thing that the medical profession actually agrees to having some research-based evidence behind it!

So, it pays to remember that some of the conditions which set the scene for conception, also help to promote labour.

1. Just as you might prepare for a romantic night in with low lights, nice candles, massage and kissing, these are all conditions which are also great for labour. The birthing brain prefers environmental conditions that promote melatonin, oxytocin, beta endorphins and other optimal hormones.
2. If you’re in a hetero relationship, and are feeling up to intercourse, semen has prostaglandins, which helps ripen the cervix. The hormone oxytocin (which is produced when we feel safe and connected) helps with getting labour started.
3. Relationship or not, arousal + orgasm helps to produce even more oxytocin and beta endorphins which can significantly help to reduce pain. There is good research evidence on the use of orgasm to relieve headaches, and period pain, and then there is the whole phenomena that is orgasmic birth.
4. Debra Pascali Bonara, doula, educator and director of the Orgasmic Birth documentary also suggests that getting out a vibrator in the birth suite is a great way to immediately clear the room!
Are you:
Pregnant or trying?
I would love to help you have the calm, and empowered pregnancy you deserve. As a Clinical-Perinatal psychologist I specialize in helping women who are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, anxious or just ‘blah’ about trying to conceive, or feeling in a rut for not ‘enjoying every moment’ of pregnancy. Maybe you’re struggling with hyperemesis gravidarum, navigating genetic testing, dealing with additional health concerns for you or baby or just generally not feeling great?
Maybe you’re freaking out about birth and are worried about the pain, or have experienced a previous traumatic birth? I’m a qualified childbirth educator and also run Hypnobirthing Australia sessions every month in the beautiful Macedon Ranges.
If you are not in the Macedon Ranges, there's still a hypnobirthing practitioner near you. Just enter your postcode

A frazzled parent
As a Clinical and Perinatal Psychologist I also work with women and their families to debrief from traumatic births, cope with anxiety and depression, and manage the general guilt fest that is mothering :)
I can offer psychology and mentoring sessions via Skype anywhere in the world (excluding the USA and Canada), so you don’t even have to get out of your PJs or leave the house!

A birth, perinatal or mental health professional
Need some debriefing or further mentoring? Want to work with pregnant and laboring women but feel you’ve had limited training in how to provide psychological first aid and support (without being a psychologist?). Not sure how to process a traumatic birth or cope with client transference issues? I can offer support and help you skill-up if you’re feeling overwhelmed or burned out.
