A 26-year-old woman was arrested in 2015 for what was described as “Facebook thugging” after uploading a selfie in which she was smiling and pointing at the camera. Kristin Holmes had been mistaken for another woman during a heated argument on the social media site. She decided to post the threatening picture of herself brandishing the deadly weapon so that others would know who she was should they want to “come find” her. Holmes lived in Chesterfield, Virginia, where state law bans the use of vulgar, indecent and threatening language online. She defended her actions by claiming the post was meant as a joke and also felt that her actions were protected by the right to free speech. Holmes was charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor, the penalty for which is up to one year in jail and a $2,500 fine, but planned to appeal the decision.
