The Mad Hatter Holiday Festival, held in Vallejo, Calif., is a major happening on the Bay Area steampunk calendar. It’s a holiday celebration like no other, featuring a steampunk-infused parade with art cars, cosplayers, and Alice in Wonderland characters.
I recently posted scenes from the 2025 festival, but I also had clips from the 2024 event that haven't seen the light of day until now.
The parade typically features a “grand finale” vehicle, but in 2024, the stars were a pair of mobile contraptions, The Serpent Twins by Jon Sarriugarte and Kyrsten Mate.
Each vehicle is 50 feet long. The darkly hued Jormungand is inspired by Norse mythology, while the silvery Julunggul, aka the Rainbow Serpent, comes from Australian Aboriginal lore.
Watch for the spectacular choreography as the vehicles move along the parade route.
Obtainium Works, the Vallejo-based art studio, also has a major presence with multiple vehicles, including Santa's steampunk rocket sled. Flaming Lotus Girls brought the fire-breathing Dragon Wagon along with Flaming Feathers, a stationary installation.
The soundtrack is an electro-swing rendition of “Jingle Bells” by Emilio Merone, licensed from Pond5.
