We all say um sometimes. And that's fine. It has a purpose. It prevents a painful silence when you can't think of what to say.
In an normal conversation, from one person to the other, it's no problem at all. But when you are in front of the camera? Actually it is a problem. Because the patience that people have in real life, they do not have with a video.
Not very nice, but that's how it works. Saying ‘umh’ once or twice in your video is fine, but if you do it more often, then your viewer thinks:
Why do I have to wait for you to figure out what you want to say? Or:
She seems a bit hesitant, why should I believe her?
So, better stop saying ‘uhm’ in your videos. How do you do that?
People who have met me "in real life" know this: I'm a huge uhm-sayer, but not in my videos! What's the difference? When I record a video I have an agreement with myself. Ofcourse I am well prepared: I’ve got a script, so I do not have to think on the spot what I actually want to share. That already saves about 20 uhm's. But I also have this agreement with myself: if I don't know what to say, I don't say anything. Then I don't make a sound.
