This is how you work with a script for your video
If you want to make videos because it's easier to talk than to write, you might be disappointed that
you have to to flip open your laptop or grab a pen and paper before turning on your camera. Now it’s
like work again, and effort and hassle, instead of just a nice spontaneous chat. But I promise - this
doesn't take time, it saves time.
Please do write a script - just a text. What do you want to say in your video? A good start,
(watch these videos for that), no more than 1 tip or insight (why that is I explain in this one),
and at the end an invitation to your viewer.
If you’re done writing, the next stop is recording. No need to memorize your script, really no
one can actually do that. Before you know it you are at taking 26 and it just goes wrong in
the last sentence. That would take hours. Choose to record the video in little chunks of two
or three sentences in a row. Then it becomes easy.
I usually print out the script. Find a spot, turn on the camera - read the first part out loud.
Then I put the script away and say the bit I just practiced into the camera.
You will never say exactly what is in the script, but that's not a problem. Be honest: this is
not poetry and not literature. So approximately saying what is in your script is good enough.
If things go really wrong, like if you say total nonsense, or start swearing, then do it again.
And again. Until you get it right. Then you turn your camera off again.
And then: new spot, different shot, and the next part of your script. You go on like this until
you’ve recorded your whole script. In your editing program or app, you add the shots
together, cut out everything that went wrong, and: wow! You’ve made a video with a good
story that is also fun to watch!
By using a script for your video, you show respect for your viewers' time and they appreciate
that - by watching more videos.
