【Olivia Newton-John】Magic【Cover】
When people ask me who my top 5 musical inspirations are, I usually name the following: Stevie Nicks, Judy Garland, Dolly Parton, Melanie Martinez, and Olivia Newton-John. Stevie Nicks and Judy Garland helped me overcome a lot of my vocal dysphoria as feminine figures with lower voices. Dolly Parton and Melanie Martinez gave me confidence to be unique. If I learned anything from listening to ONJ, it was that it was okay to be softer rather than belting loudly all the time. The wispy, ethereal quality of her voice captivated me from the first time I ever heard a song of hers, and as I listen back to some of my covers, I can hear how she influenced me and how I sing. This song was not the first song of hers I've ever heard. That was Hopelessly Devoted to You (which will be covered another day), but when I first saw Xanadu, Magic was the first one that hooked me into the film's soundtrack. Though I couldn't recite the plot back to you, the impression Xanadu left on me was more due to the music than anything else, and ONJ was a major part of that. I had fun whenever I heard her sing, and it was one of the only things that kept me from falling asleep from the philosophical platitudes about inspiration between each musical number. As I got older and continued to follow her career, her humanitarian work, especially as a breast cancer advocate, really touched me. It helped me realize that all I want to do with my music and my acting is to just leave a positive impact on someone's life. RIP ONJ, and thank you for making my life more magical.
