I'd like to talk with you about networking etiquette.
When networking, the most valuable thing you can do is focus on building authentic relationships. This can only be done if you are fully present and true to yourself.
How many times have you gone somewhere, whether it's sitting at a coffee shop with a friends or out on the golf course that you see everyone has their phone beside them. There are some circumstances when you may need your phone, and no, I'm not talking about waiting for a phone call concerning a big contract. That's not a good reason.
You could be expecting a call from a family member. Perhaps your husband is having wisdom teeth surgery, and you're waiting for a call to pick him up. Or your children are home alone, and you want to be available for them.
Let people know this in advance. Put your phone out on the table and say "I'm only putting this here because my children may need me and I've let them know they can call me today." Or maybe you don't have a watch; let them know "I'm honouring your time and putting the phone here so I can help us keep track because I know you need to get to another meeting". Let them know why you're putting it there, otherwise, even though you're not looking at it and it's not ringing, they're thinking that you're waiting for something more important than them. Cell phone etiquette is crucial in being polite while networking.
