It’s normal to feel overwhelmed when you’re at the start of a big goal or project, whether you’re trying to improve at something or learn something new.

But there’s a really simple solution to this.

Rather than focusing too much on your big, long-term goal, you need to start by chunking down your goals into smaller, more manageable steps. Even if you don’t know every step along the way you can start by figuring out the smallest step forward possible and take it.

Do enough of these small action steps forward on a consistent basis and they’ll add up big time.

For example, let’s say you want to be able to do a pull-up but you’ve never been able to do one before. You don’t want to start by trying to do a full pull up, because you’re probably not going to be able to do one when you’re first starting out and that’s only going to make you feel discouraged. Instead, you want to start at the level you’re currently at - maybe this means doing bodyweight rows to start to build up some strength, or if you’re close to a full pull up but can’t quite do one just yet you may want to focus on negative pull-ups to get you past that sticking point.

Then, once you make a little progress at that modification, you’ll try one that’s just a little bit harder to keep challenging yourself and taking small steps forward toward your end goal.

The cool thing is that you can apply this to any goal, not just fitness goals, but fitness is a great way to practice because the more you practice chunking down big goals, the easier it becomes in all areas of your life.
