Dr. Aster: Hello and welcome. Today's topic is snoring. Snoring is the vibration of respiratory structures and the resulting sound due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping. In some cases, the sound may be soft, but in most cases, it can be loud and unpleasant. Sometimes it's caused by a condition like sleep apnoea, which is when your airways become temporarily blocked as you sleep. If snoring is affecting the quality of your life, see a doctor. Doctor will look inside your mouth and nose to check for any problems that might be causing your snoring. The doctor might also ask you to go through a sleep study if required. Doctors often recommend lifestyle changes as a first line treatment to stop snoring. This is the reason snorers are advised to lose weight (to stop fat from pressing on the throat), stop smoking as smoking weakens and clogs the throat, avoid alcohol and sedative medications before bedtime and sleep on their side to prevent the tongue from blocking the throat. Thank You.
