Here we are applying Kote Gaeshi from strike with the speed and force of a strike. We are doing Kote Gaeshi as a lead and not as a parry. That means that as the thrust or swing comes at us we let it come through the target by moving the target out of the way rather than moving the strike out of the way. We have our hands lightly around Uke's hands to keep Uke's attention on attacking us. As the attack develops we use our heads to lead the attack. Notice that Nage's arm is up much like an Outside Hook protecting Nage's head as Nage's head leads Uke's second punch. Done correctly this does not apply any pain or harmful force to Uke's arm. When applied in a survival situation the technique can be applied with considerable force injuring Uke with the collision with the ground.
These techniques look very simple and in a sense they are, but they are not easy to learn. When doing these Nage barely touches Uke and the throws seem like magic. Most people explain them in magical terms but we think it is better to describe them as reflex control. Because the people learning the technique cannot feel what is making them fall it is difficult to learn. If you have a partner and you are trying to learn to do these feel free to contact me at the email address below. At this time I will be happy to work with you.
