Here are more fun facts about our solar system:
Sun – One million Earths could fit inside the Sun. The temperature inside the Sun can reach 15 million degrees Celsius. The distance between the Earth and the Sun is an Astronomical Unit (AU).
Mercury – Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. Your weight on Mercury would be 38% of your weight on Earth. A day on the surface of Mercury lasts 176 Earth days. A year on Mercury takes 88 Earth days.
Venus – Venus is nearly as big as the Earth with a diameter of 12,104 km. A year on Venus takes 225 Earth days. The surface temperature on Venus can reach 471 °C.
Earth – You most likely live here. The Earth is the densest planet in the Solar System. 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered in water. A year on Earth isn’t 365 days It’s actually 365.2564 days. It’s this extra .2564 days that creates the need for leap years.
Mars – Mars and Earth have approximately the same landmass because most of Earth’s surface is covered in water. Martian surface gravity is only 37% of the Earth’s. Mars is home to the tallest mountain in the solar system. Olympus Mons, a shield volcano, is 21km high and 600km in diameter.
Jupiter – Jupiter has the shortest day of all the planets. It turns on its axis once every 9 hours and 55 minutes. Jupiter’s moon Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system. It is two and a half times more massive than all the other planets in the solar system combined making it the biggest planet in the solar system.
Saturn – Saturn orbits the Sun once every 29.4 Earth years. Saturn has 82 moons which means it has more moons than any other planet. Saturn has the most extensive rings in the solar system.
Uranus – Uranus makes one trip around the Sun every 84 Earth years. Uranus was officially discovered by Sir William Herschel in 1781. Uranus is often referred to as an “ice giant” planet.
Neptune – Neptune is the most distant planet from the Sun. A year on Neptune lasts 165 Earth years. Neptune is the Coldest Planet in the Solar System.
What is the Kuiper Belt? The Kuiper Belt (sometimes referred to as the Kuiper-Edgeworth Belt) is an area of the outer solar system that is estimated to stretch across 20 astronomical units (AU) of space. It contains small solar system bodies made mostly of ices. The ices are frozen volatiles (gases) such as methane, ammonia, nitrogen and water. It also is home to the known dwarf planets Pluto, Haumea and Makemake.
What is the Oort Cloud? The Oort Cloud is an extended shell of icy objects that exist in the outermost reaches of the solar system. It is named after astronomer Jan Oort, who first theorized its existence. The Oort Cloud is roughly spherical, and is thought to be the origin of most of the long-period comets that have been observed.
