Word 2010 makes it very easy to create an automatic table of contents.
As long as you do some work first, that is tell word what your chapter titles, headings and subheadings are.
Go to your document's chapter titles, select your chapter title and from the Home tab click on Heading 1.
Do the same for your chapter's section and subsection headings. You can mark a chapter section's title as a level 2 subheading by selecting the subheading and clicking on Heading 2. Do the same for the subsection's heading by selecting it and clicking on Heading 3.
You need to repeat the process for all your document's tiles.
Then go to the References tab and from the Table of Contents, click on Table on Contents and choose from one of 2 available automatic table of contents' formats.
You can also change your table of contents' title by simply going to your automatic table of contents in your word document and changing it to a title of your choice.
