In this practitioner review, Tom Blackley, an IT leader with nearly 30 years of experience in telecommunications and enterprise technology, shares his perspective on using Duo Security for multi-factor authentication in a large, multi-industry organization.
Following a credential compromise that resulted in a breach, the company implemented Duo Security to strengthen identity verification and reduce risk. According to Tom, multi-factor authentication has become a critical requirement for protecting enterprise systems, and the introduction of Duo has helped prevent further credential-based incidents.
Tom highlights the platform’s intuitive user experience and centralized management capabilities for IT teams. The Duo portal allows administrators to manage authentication efficiently while freeing the service desk to focus on other operational priorities.
Beyond immediate security improvements, Duo Security also helps organizations move toward more advanced security architectures such as passwordless authentication and zero-trust environments. In Tom’s experience, the platform provides strong stability, scalability, and risk reduction for enterprise environments.

My background is in electrical engineering, and I have nearly 30 years of experience in the industry, mostly in telecommunications and more recently in enterprise environments. I currently work in Anchorage, Alaska for an Alaska Native company that operates across multiple industries, including government contracts, construction, and oilfield services.
Our Duo Security implementation was completed about three and a half to four years ago, roughly six months before I joined the organization. The implementation was driven by a breach caused by compromised credentials. I’ve personally been using Duo since I joined the company about three years ago.
Currently, we primarily use Duo for multi-factor authentication. Given the breach we experienced in the past, having MFA in place is critical. If it had been implemented earlier, it likely would have prevented that incident. Today, I believe multi-factor authentication is absolutely necessary for any modern IT environment.
Password management can be challenging for users, which is why we are exploring passwordless options. We’re currently evaluating several additional capabilities within Duo, including passwordless authentication and potential VPN replacement options, although those have not yet been adopted.
The primary benefit of multi-factor authentication is risk reduction. It adds an additional verification layer that confirms the identity of the person accessing the environment.
From a usability perspective, the platform is intuitive and straightforward for users. It’s also easy for IT staff to manage through the centralized portal. Our service desk team uses the portal daily and it allows them to efficiently manage authentication without consuming excessive time.
Like any security system, challenges exist. For example, the industry continues to address threats such as push-bombing attacks. However, Duo continues to evolve to mitigate those risks.
I currently lead an IT organization that still has some technical debt and has not yet implemented a full zero-trust architecture. Duo helps bridge that gap by strengthening identity verification while we continue moving toward a more mature security model.
Credential-based authentication alone is inherently weak, which is why adding a second factor is essential. Multi-factor authentication significantly improves security posture.
I have used other MFA platforms personally, but Duo was selected before I joined the organization and I’ve been very pleased with the platform.
While I can’t speak directly to the cost, it appears comparable to other enterprise MFA solutions. In my view, it is a premium product and priced accordingly.
Since implementing Duo, we have not experienced another breach involving compromised credentials.
I have worked with Cisco support for more than 25 years. Over time I’ve seen improvements, particularly in responsiveness. One challenge can be finding the right expert initially, but once the correct resources are engaged, Cisco has strong expertise and commitment to solving issues.
From a stability standpoint, my experience with Duo has been very positive. I have not encountered major issues with the application or the management portal.
In terms of scalability, our organization has about 5,000 employees, which is well within the capacity of the platform. I have not seen any limitations in that regard.
Overall, I would rate Duo Security around an eight out of ten. They have the expertise and resources needed to solve complex problems, and they continue to be a committed partner.
