Hey everyone!
Do you know any bags that can withstand 2500°F?! Today I am reviewing a very interesting product that EVERYONE should have in their homes. The product is a fireproof bag to protect your valuables in the event of a fire.
My first reactions about this fireproof bag was that it is HUGE! The dimensions of this bag measure 15"x12"x5" or 900 cubic inches! So, obviously, this bag will hold not just paperwork like passports, birth certificates, or savings bonds...but it could also hold backup hard drives, tablets, thumb drives, or other bulky valuables. It can also be folded up for storage.
This bag has excellent construction quality, has some weight to it, and appears to be built with quality materials. The fundamental material that resists fire infiltration in this bag are three layers of fiberglass with an outer finished coating covered in smooth silicone. This silicone is not only aesthetically pleasing, but it prevents getting any glass splinters from the fiberglass fabric. This method works very well as I had no splinters whatsoever. This bag closes via a smooth working silicone covered zipper that allows access to the bag's interior. There is also a secondary level of protection created by a large overlapping flap that covers the zipper end and attaches to the bag via a hook and loop (Velcro) system.
Although this bag can resist high temperature flames by itself, it is recommended by the manufacture (and highly suggested by me) that you place this bag with Velcro side down and put it in a fireproof safe for additional protection. Nothing is completely fireproof. Metal, after all, will melt if it gets hot enough! By creating this second layer of protection you will have even more success in protecting your valuables!
The manufacturer claims this bag can resist temperatures up to 2500° Fahrenheit. (SGS TEST: UL94 VTM-0 Certified) This is a bold claim and I was initially skeptical because that is a lot of heat! In my video I tested this claim with a butane kitchen torch that I had available. According to Wikipedia: "A butane torch is a tool which creates an intensely hot flame using butane, a flammable gas. Consumer air butane torches are often claimed to develop flame temperatures up to approximately 1,430 °C (2,610 °F). This temperature is high enough to melt many common metals, such as aluminum and copper, and hot enough to vaporize many organic compounds as well." If you watch my video, this bag easily handled a butane torch point-blank blowing on it even when the exterior of the bag turned red hot! Yes there was some brown marks from the flame after the test, however, aside from some heat penetration, the bag was essentially unscathed inside! I was shocked. Given that heat (not flame) seemed to penetrate the bag after opening post-test, I stand by the recommendation to place this bag into a fireproof safe for additional protection.
One note: The bag has a carrying handle and includes a long shoulder strap to carry it by as well. These are NOT fireproof. In fact, they are flammable...however they DO NOT compromise the integrity of the bag itself!
This bag is also water-resistant in the event that it gets soaked in water from a fire hose. The Amazon listing uses the word waterproof and water-resistant interchangeably but makes sure to point out that the bag should not be submerged. My takeaway...this bag is certainly water-resistant everywhere. Just don't take it swimming with you if you want everything to stay dry. Ha!
Lastly, the bag comes with a lifetime warranty and customer service!
In conclusion, GO BUY THIS PRODUCT! Invest in some piece of mind now in the event that you happen to fall victim to a fire and lose everything!
