The island of Saaremaa, which belongs to Estonia, was one of the westernmost islands of the former Soviet Union. For this reason, it had a considerable number of military bases. One of them was located in the northwest on the Tagamõisa peninsula. The artillery base was built in 1940 and expanded in the 1960s. In the 1990s, the site was used by the Estonian military and later abandoned. The trees have grown inside the buildings. Nature has successfully reclaimed the area.
