The inland dune
Inland dunes are a relic of the last Ice Age. They were formed twelve to six thousand years ago when the sparse vegetation could not hold the sand against the wind in the dry and cold climate. Nowadays the inland dunes are forested. Therefore, although they are several tens of meters high, they do not attract attention. They become visible and then active again when the vegetation is removed from the surface. That is exactly what happened at this former military training area. The heavy army vehicles exposed the dune. Today, the flora is struggling with the lack of nutrients in the sand and the scarcity of water. A large area of forest steppe emerged. Meanwhile, pine and birch are slowly spreading.
