Nadler Opposes PATRIOT ACT Reauthorization
Rep. Jerry Nadler speaks on the House floor to oppose yet another extension of overreaching government surveillance powers. Among other powers, the bill reauthorizes so-called "roving wiretaps" that identify neither the person nor the place to be surveilled—an almost limitless surveillance authority for the government to spy on anyone and anyplace it desires.
Further, the House has done nothing to properly consider the provisions being extended. With dozens of new Members having not even received a classified security briefing on the subject, the nascent Congress is wholly unprepared to consider such a long extension of expanded surveillance powers. Committee hearings, expert testimony, and the normal amendment process have all been circumvented by rushing this bill to the floor, diminishing Congress's oversight ability in the process.
