Rushing to Extend the PATRIOT Act is Dangerous
Rep. Jerry Nadler speaks in opposition to the hasty extension of overbroad government surveillance powers. The House has done nothing to consider the powers being extended, having held neither hearings nor committee mark-ups to properly consider the legislation being rushed to a vote. Instead of kicking the can down the road for another 10 months, we should reconsider the PATRIOT Act in its entirety, including the 14 surveillance provisions which are scheduled to sunset. Only through careful oversight and review can we determine where the PATRIOT Act has succeeded, where it has failed, and where it jeopardizes our essential liberties.
