Elite: Dangerous - Ship's 'Silent Running' Basics (Switch to Flight Assist Off)
Using Silent Running to shut radiator vents so there's less chance of appearing on radar. Switching to Flight Assist Off will enable you to drift with the Thrusters' module turned off and get the most out of the Silent Running function (with FA On, your speed will bleed down to zero after switching thrusters off).
You would of course benefit greatly from having a Heat Sink Launcher fitted, but to learn to use Silent Running without them first, will be all the more beneficial when you do use Heat Sinks in combination. Again, some of this may appear incredibly obvious, but it's intended for the Beta 2/3 beginner as well. (I'm not quite sure why, but I do in fact turn the Cargo Rack & Scanner Off which you don't need to as these don't use any energy). ALSO, keep in mind with interdictions now possible, turning systems off during cruise is a high risk strategy as you will be unprepared if you are interdicted, so turn systems off here at your own risk.
