Smart New Perspectives: Remote Learning
This is a video of my professional journey through Remote Learning in the first semester of the 20-21 school year. Feeling like a new teacher, I was forced to bring a new look to a career I have had for 15 years. New tools, new technology and new ways to engage students across distances.
So what does that look like in an Art room? What gets lost across Distance Learning? or maybe the right question is: What is gained?
This is not like any kind of art program you would remember. Gone are the Middle School Art Program staples like painting and clay...
So the curriculum shifted to adapt to the needs of the students as well as the means of education this year. Many of our projects went digital. The students learned techniques tools and processes for: 3D printing, Graphic Design, Film, Photography and Animations.
My students did a remarkable job to engage with the process of creation. The art room had some of the highest marks for attendance, participation and grades through distance education. I found that the kids were ready to create. And excited for it!
I positioned myself to be able to easily shift the curriculum by years of work and staying a student myself. Over the course of my career, I have pursued the goal of learning at least one new art process every summer. Over the years, I taught myself how to create specialized photography, time-lapse films, stop motion films, video game design, 3D printing, animation, GIF making... and many other digital creations. This knowledge and experience of a wide array of artistic medium allowed me to quickly turn that into wonderful learning experiences for my students this past semester.
I felt invigorated by the change and inspired by my students! Despite the hardships and the cancel-culture we were living in, my students and I lived in a culture to create!
