Now that we can draw some great solids, we will add our lights and darks through shading. The video will cover three key concepts- Creating several levels or VALUES of shading, working with a single light source, and creating motions with our shading.
The first task will be to create a VALUE scale. This is a simple box with five separations to practice pressing hard or soft with the pencil to create five distinct levels of shade.
Next we will apply these levels of shading to our three-dimensional drawings. We will see how using a single light source can help us create a convincing illusion of one space for all of our solids. We can use the light source almost like a vanishing point to identify where light falls by drawing lines from our light source to our solids.
Finally, as we apply our lights and darks, we should use definitive motions with our pencil marks to show how the shadows might fall across a 3D surface.
These skills can dramatically increase the realism of your 3D drawings and illusions. These new shading techniques are best used in collaboration with the techniques we have learned in the previous lessons.
