Power BI Tabular Models use a compression algorithm; the net result of this is that fewer columns are better than more rows, so in our dataset (or many other corporate datasets) we can use "Unpivot" to convert the columns to rows and then a new "Index" to map the original table to the unpivoted table. To make for a much more efficient table structure.

The added benefit is that it simplifies the DAX requirements needed to produce your visualisations. In the case of our unpivot, we go from having to write 27 measures to be able to just use an "Automatic First Value".
