How to Epoxy a Chipped Concrete Garage Floor
Training seminars usually take place on good concrete, plastic or Masonite. These surfaces give no indication of most real jobs. It’s okay to practice in a controlled environment to learn the product the host is selling, but the real world requires more attention to the substrate or the coating will fail.
In this case, the slab was over 30 years old and in really bad shape. To prepare for a flake floor, we did the following to epoxy a chipped concrete floor:
1. Bush-hammer to loosen and remove the obvious delamination. This is important because weakly bonded concrete will NOT be held in place by any epoxy.
2. Shotblast to remove any subsequent, loose, concrete and fine mineral dust. The dust that would be left by vacuuming only could react with moisture vapor and cause a later failure.
3. Skim using 100% solids epoxy and DE mixed to manufacturer recommended ratios. This will fill the low spots and seal the entire surface.
