| A Meditation for Zaituni |
The mountain meditation is a relaxing exercise that can be effective for bringing anxious emotions down to the ground. Find your centre and strengthen your mind by adopting the qualities of your personal mountain.
This practice is a combination of a visualization exercise and mindfulness meditation. Shifting the mind between imagery of your mountain and awareness of your thoughts, emotions and physical state, your body and the mountain become “one.” You may find yourself feeling stable and strong like your mountain, flowing through the weather and seasonal changes of life with both stability and grace!

Zaituni’s Story (2019):
Zaituni is a widow from Sadala, Tanzania, who has been raising 7 children on her own since 2006. For several years, she worked day jobs on local farms as a means of supporting her children’s education. However, this was often not enough and many of her children were unable to attend school. Additionally, Zaituni often could not afford meals for her children, nor could she afford to repair her crumbling mud hut. She faced discrimination from her late husband’s family, and admitted that she constantly faced stress and hopelessness.
After she was provided with funding in 2011 as part of my initial fundraising efforts, Zaituni opened a small business selling goods (such as soaps) at the local market. Although business has been up and down (struggling due to the economy), she has been able to move from her mud hut into a concrete home that she built for herself (pictured behind her in this video). She has also been able to fund her children’s school fees, and installed a toilet as well as a water tap. Zaituni disclosed that her stress is gone and feels that she has heart again.
Halima’s Hope:
Zaituni is an example for other women in her community with regards to what’s possible with a bit of funding (it only cost about $50 CAD to start Zaituni’s business). She would now like to expand her business, and go on to work with other women in her community.
