| A Meditation for Halima |
The short breathing space meditation offers a chance to take a step back from one’s spiraling thoughts and emotions in order to gain perspective. We all have moments when overwhelm gets the better of us and we find ourselves going down the “rabbit hole” of worry, anxiety, catastrophizing, over-analyzing, or over-working. The short breathing space is great for a mid-day break to press the "re-set button" of our minds.

Halima’s Story (2019):
Halima is a single mother of 5 children living in Sadala, Tanzania. Prior to receiving funding for her small business start-up through my initial fundraising efforts in 2011, Halima described her life condition as “poor” and reported that she did not find any enjoyment in life. While she was hired for day work on local farms, Halima was unable to pay for her children’s school fees, and as such, the police had a warrant for her arrest.
Halima opened a market stall with the funds she was provided with in 2011. Business was going well for a time, until she developed stomach ulcers, which prevented her from working. Over the past three years, the stress of her illness and diminishing income resulted in her business collapsing altogether. As a result, she is once again facing unemployment and isolation. Additionally, she cannot afford to repair her mud hut, which partially collapsed following a rain storm. Although one of her sons currently lives in the village, Halima only sees him periodically, and otherwise, spends each day on her own, struggling with depression and worrying about the future.
Halima’s Hope:
Despite her depression, Halima feels motivated to start over and open a retail business.
