Becoming an observer of our experiences – physical, emotional, mental, and so on – teaches us about the impermanent nature of what we face every day. When we take a step back and watch the variety of “objects” that come in and out of our awareness over a short period of time, we learn that we don’t have to hold on to any one thing too tightly.

Thoughts are just mental activity and our brains eventually “change channels.” On the other hand, strong feelings can be present without preventing us from attending to other things throughout our days.

Eventually, all of our experiences, including the most distressing ones, will pass.

Despite feeling like we “must” react quickly from our experiences (in order to make unpleasantries go away), we can learn to observe, detach, and move forward with perspective and insight, watching our perceived negative experiences eventually transform.

Fatuma’s Story (2019):

Fatuma is a single mother who lives in Sadala, Tanzania, with her 5 children. Prior to receiving initial funding for her small business in 2011, Fatuma worked on local farms. However, work was't always available. Additionally, Fatuma often struggled with dizziness following a motorcycle accident, so when work was available, she was not always able to take it on. As a result, Fatuma could not afford her children’s school fees, nor the fees for her niece, who she also helped support.

Fatuma was thrilled to receive funding in 2011 to open a small business selling millet, tea leaves, garlic, pots, and other goods at various markets in the area. Although she was able to purchase 11 goats with her profits, Fatuma said that business has been up and down with a recent economic downturn in the country. Once again, she is unable to cover the cost of her children’s school fees.

Fatuma’s Hope:

Fatuma would like to recover and grow her business once again in order to sustain herself despite fluctuations in the market, and she would like continued encouragement/empowerment from other business women.
