This is your typical leaf rubbing technique but it could be used to relate to several topics: Photocopying, composition, movement, hot and cold colours, textures, learning how to use wax crayons, seasons etc. Currently it is Autumn here in the UK (or Fall in the US) and makes for the perfect autumn art activity. You could make this a more spring / summer inspired picture by using greens and looking how the light shines through the leaves instead and that would work more for the older children.
This is an hour art lesson, it is more like an hour and 15 mins but we managed to just finish it within an hour (at a push). The children that did this with me were 6- 11 year olds, the older ones really enjoyed the effect that it gave overall and the younger ones like the rubbing technique.
There aren't many materials needed for the project and this could easily be used for an art on a cart lesson or an art sub lesson. The best thing is that there is no prep needed.
