The Meaning of "Word of God" (and "Word of the Lord")
We use the phrase "Word of God" and "Word of the Lord" in a few different ways as Christians.
The Word of God or the Word of the Lord has a few meanings:
1) Scripture
A Christian might refer to the Bible as the "Word of God," which generally expresses the fact that Sacred Scripture includes God's words. In this case, however, we might use "Word of God" as a concrete way of referring to Scripture rather than a more solemn reference to God's specific words.
2) God's words within Scripture
Within the Old Testament, New Testament, and early Christian writings the term "Word" is used to refer to the words from God given to his people either through angels or prophets.
The term is also used to refer to the words of Jesus Christ in the New Testament.
We even use the phrase during the liturgy announcing at the end of the reading, "The Word of the Lord" with a response "Thanks be to God."
3) Jesus Christ is the Word
But a much deeper meaning is expressed by the term Word. In the Gospel of John, Jesus Christ is referred to as the Word. In this case, "word" is a translation of the Greek term "Logos," which could either be translated as "word" or "reason" or "discourse." Our English word "logic" comes from the Greek word "logos."
By referring to Jesus as the Logos (Word), John and the early Christians after him expressed that Jesus Christ transcended ordinary birth. He is reason itself and the source of all knowledge. He preceded all of creation and existed at the foundation of the world.
