Jesus Christ: Priest, Prophet, and King
Jesus Christ was the Messiah, the “Anointed One.” This is the original meaning of “Christ.” Christ means “Messiah” in Greek, which translates as “Anointed One.”
Why was he the Anointed One?
He was anointed like the Old Testament priests, prophets, and kings. He fulfills all three offices and we are also baptized into these roles as members of Christ’s Body, the Church.
Jesus was a Priest
Jesus was the High Priest in the line of Melchizedek. His sacrifice was the sacrifice on the cross but also established at the Last Supper. Our celebration of the Eucharist is in memory of the words he instituted during the Last Supper and lived out by shedding his blood.
Jesus was a Prophet
Like the prophets of the Old Testament, Jesus performed many miracles and preached a message of good news to the people. He called himself a prophet at the very beginning of his ministry pointing out how he was not without honor in his hometown.
Jesus was a King
Jesus preached about the Kingdom of God. He was crucified with the inscription INRI (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). His kingdom was not of this world, but he sits at the right of the Father. He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords and all bow down to him on his heavenly throne.
Finally, when we are baptized we join in these roles as members of the Body of Christ. Those who are ordained through the Sacrament of Holy Orders also take on these roles in a greater way.
