Who wrote the Bible?
Did God write the Bible? Did humans write the Bible? If humans wrote the Bible, did they write word-for-word what God wanted them to say? How much influence did God have on the actual words that were written?
These are just some of the questions we might ask ourselves as we study the Bible and its composition. Consider this:
1. The Bible is a collection of many books written by many human authors over the course of many centuries.
2. Careful study of the texts reveals that many of the books were written or compiled by multiple human authors.
3. The books were originally written in different languages with the Old Testament in mostly Hebrew and Greek and the New Testament in Greek.
4. Many stories and hymns in the Bible were passed down orally before they were included as a part of the books.
5. There are many types of books in the Bible with a variety of genres from historical books to psalms, prophetic works, wisdom books, narrative literature, and letters.
Back to the question: who wrote the Bible? Did God write the Bible?
First, yes, God is the author of Sacred Scripture (CCC, 105).
But the books were written by human beings with God’s inspiration.
The authors of each of the books were inspired by the Holy Spirit but the words on the page were not dictated word-for-word by God in heaven. Each author used personal experience, knowledge, language, and historical context to compose the books.
The opening words of Pope Pius XII’s Divino Afflante Spiritu say it best:
“Inspired by the Divine Spirit, the Sacred Writers composed those books, which God, in His paternal charity towards the human race, deigned to bestow on them in order "to teach, to reprove, to correct, to instruct in justice: that the man of God may be perfect, furnished to every good work.”
