Who was Job (pronounced JOHB with a long-O sound) in the Bible?
The story of Job is found in the Old Testament Book of Job. At the beginning of the book, Job is a successful and happy family man. He feared the Lord and turned away from evil and God greatly blessed him.
Then Satan confronts God about Job’s success. He challenges God to take away Job’s wealth, health, and family, then see how much he will remain faithful to God. The Lord allows it and Job’s difficult journey begins. He loses everything including his wife and children.
Three friends come to Job to help him makes sense of his challenges and to offer advice. They wonder if Job sinned and deserved God’s punishment. Job becomes downcast and depressed. He wishes he was never born and becomes angry with God for the bad things that happened to him despite being a good person.
Then God appears to Job in a storm and gives a long speech that he begins by asking, “Where were you when I founded the earth?”
After the speech, Job realizes how insignificant he is compared to the greatness of God. He takes back what he said and vows to repent in dust and ashes.
In the epilogue of the story, God is pleased by Job’s answer and restores all that was taken away from him and more. He lives on for many years seeing his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow up.
Was Job a real person or fictional character?
The Book of Job is a literary piece not to be seen as an historical account. The structure of the work make it clear that the story was written to teach important lessons about suffering and our relationship with God. The use of literary techniques, however, should not rule out the possibility or likelihood that Job was an actual person who experienced unnatural hardship. Many local traditions developed around the life of Job and historical sites like his burial tomb can be found.
