The Resurrection of the Body (Catholic Church Teaching)
As Catholics we believe in the resurrection of the body (the flesh). We state this belief in the Apostles' Creed: "I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting." A common misconception about life after death is that our soul lives on in heaven or hell and that’s it.
Yes, we will experience a particular judgment after our death and our soul will either be in unity with God in heaven or in separation from God in hell. But, that is not where things end.
Jesus Christ rose from the dead in bodily form. The Apostles saw his risen body. Saint Thomas even put his fingers in the wounded side of Jesus to prove it was him. Jesus’s glorified body then ascended up into heaven.
So, what happens to us when we die?
1. Death: Our soul separates from the body in death.
2. Particular Judgment: Our soul will either be united with God in heaven (after our purification if necessary) or separated from God in hell.
3. Final Judgment: On the last day, Jesus Christ will return and our souls will be reunited with our bodies. This is what we call the Resurrection of the Body when our bodies and souls will rise as Jesus did. Then we will experience unity with God in the New Heaven and the New Earth in our glorified bodies.
These risen bodies will be glorified bodies like Jesus Christ in the Resurrection, but they will be our very own bodies. They will not be new or separate or better other than the infusion of God’s glory as spiritual bodies, imperishable bodies.
