The Asian Pied starling (Sturnus contra) or uren starling is a species of starling found in the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. These birds are usually found in small groups at the foot of valleys and in lowlands. Asian Piedstarlings are often found in cities and rural areas, although they are not as bold as the purple-rumped bird. The Suren starling has several feather variations in its population, and to date five subspecies have been identified.
Asian Pied starlings live mainly in the lowlands, but can also be found in the foothills up to 700 meters above sea level. These birds are mainly found in areas near open water. Like other types of starlings, this bird chooses tree holes as a place to live. Asian Pied starlings like open secondary forests that are full of tall trees and reeds.
Its population in the wild is not known with certainty but what is certain is that this bird is categorized by the IUCN Red List as having "Least Concern" or "Low Risk" conservation status. In the past on the island of Java, in the 1970s, it was often found throughout the island of Java, but now we can no longer see the Asian Pied starling living in the wild. Its presence in Indonesia is starting to decrease, due to pollution and exploitation. But unfortunately the Indonesian government has not protected it. Another reason for the rarity of this species is the use of pesticides to eradicate pests. However, as a result of the rarity of this species, another type of species, namely the black starling, is cheaper than the Asian Pied starling.
