Hippopotamus/Hippo Calling Sound

Commonly referred to as "hippos," the hippopotamus, specifically the common hippopotamus, Nile hippopotamus, or river hippopotamus, is a sizable semiaquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of only two surviving species in the family Hippopotamidae, the other being the pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis or Hexaprotodon liberiensis). Its name is derived from the ancient Greek term for "river horse."

Hippos are semiaquatic creatures requiring access to ample water for submersion while staying near grasslands. Though capable of consuming various plants in captivity, their natural diet primarily consists of grass, with only occasional consumption of aquatic vegetation. They tend to favor calm waters with gently sloping banks, although male hippos may occasionally be found in small numbers in faster-flowing waters with rocky terrain. While primarily inhabiting freshwater habitats, they can also be found in estuaries. Despite their semiaquatic nature, adult hippos are not proficient swimmers and cannot float. They rarely venture into deep water; instead, they navigate by bouncing off the riverbed. Adult hippos resurface every four to six minutes, while juveniles need to breathe every two to three minutes.
