The mouse deer is a small member of the Tragulidae family, a group of even-toed hoofed animals. They are widespread in Southeast Asia, including Sumatra and Kalimantan, and are one of the smallest hornbills in the world. In some areas of Sumatra, they are referred to as pelanduk or sometimes kancil, while in Kalimantan they are known as kancil pelanduk, kancil pelanduk, or small kanduk, and other variations. In English, they are referred to as Lesser mouse-deer or Lesser Malay chevrotain. Other names for the pelanduk include yun (Burmese), kancil, and pelandok (Malay).
Mouse deer are active both at night and during the day, feeding on fallen fruit, leaf buds and fungi. They are generally solitary, often seen traveling alone, or in pairs during the breeding season. Their nests are usually located in rock crevices or wood holes, but if none are available, they will hide under dense vegetation. Their gestation period lasts 140-177 days, and usually gives birth to one cub, sometimes two.
This hornbill inhabits high forests, secondary forests, and sometimes enters gardens. They are found on the edges of lowland forests up to a height of 600 m, as well as in dense thickets and mangrove forests along the coast of Tenasserim to the Malay Peninsula. They are distributed in the forests of Southeast Asia, including Sumatra, Kalimantan, and surrounding small islands, and were reportedly found in Tenasserim and Cambodia by W.T. Blanford.
