The brown-cheeked bulbul (Alophoixus bres) is a type of songbird belonging to the Pycnonotidae family, commonly known as bulbuls. This bird species is native to Java and Bali, inhabiting subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests as well as subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. Its diet primarily consists of insects such as caterpillars, butterflies, moths, beetle larvae, cicadas, crickets, grasshoppers, and tephritid fruit flies. Additionally, it consumes various fruits including mangir, lempeni, and senggani.
When it comes to nesting, these bulbuls construct cup-shaped nests using plant fragments and camouflage them with moss and lichen. They typically nest in trees like majegau, melinjo, cacao, and mahogany. Initially classified under the genus Lanius and later categorized as Criniger, the brown-cheeked bulbul was reclassified under the genus Alophoixus in 2009. Other names for this species include the grey-cheeked bulbul, olive white-headed bulbul, and scrub bulbul.
