The Distinguished Pelican
They are one of the biggest flying birds and have a unique large pouch that makes them easy to identify. Meet the pelican.
There are only eight extant species, six primarily white, except the brown and Peruvian pelican. The shortest pelican species, the brown pelican, stands 1.06 meters tall with a wing span of 1.8 meters, while the longest pelican species, the Dalmatian, stands 1.8 meters tall with a wing span of 3 meters. These water birds are found on all continents except Antarctica, residing close to rivers, lakes and coastlines. Four species prefer nesting on the ground, while three prefer nesting in trees, and the Peruvian pelican nests mainly on sea rocks.
