The song was written by Hendrik Tollens after the French occupation in 1815. It won a contest to be the anthem of the Netherlands and was the official anthem of the Netherlands from 1817 till 1932. It was never a popular song because many loved the song Wilhelmus instead of Wien Neêrlandsch Bloed. Even the Royals wanted the Wilhelmus as the anthem. So in 1932 after pressure from Queen Wilhelmina the anthem was changed to the Wilhelmus.

Het lied werd geschreven door Hendrik Tollens na de Franse bezetting in 1815. Het won een wedstrijd voor het volkslied van Nederland en was het officiële volkslied van Nederland van 1817 tot 1932. Het was nooit een populair lied omdat velen van het lied Wilhelmus hielden in plaats van Wien Neêrlandsch Bloed. Zelfs het Koninklijke huis wilden het Wilhelmus als volkslied. Dus in 1932 werd het volkslied na druk van koningin Wilhelmina veranderd in het Wilhelmus.
