Veterans Day is the same day as is the feast of St. Martin of Tours, who was a soldier in the Roman Empire in the fourth century. These two days are uniquely linked.

Veterans Day was established by the U.S. Congress as the new name for "Armistice Day," which was the day that a treaty was signed to end World War I. The treaty was signed on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month of the year 1918.

November 11th was a traditional day of signing treaties to end violence in European history. This was because November 11th is the feast of St. Martin of Tours, a veteran Roman soldier who left the military to pursue a peaceful life dedicated to Jesus Christ.

Therefore, on Veterans Day we honor those who fought for our country in the United States. A veteran is a former soldier who is no longer in active duty. We remember also St. Martin of Tours, a veteran soldier whose love for God led him to leave the Roman army and become a soldier for Christ.

Here is a little more about his life:

Saint Martin of Tours Biography

St. Martin was a Roman soldier in the fourth century.

The more he grew in his love for God, though, the more he didn't want to fight.

"I am the soldier of Christ; it is not lawful for me to fight," he once told his superior.

The army released him and he eventually became a bishop in the city of Tours.

Most pictures of St. Martin show him with a poor man. As the legend goes, he came across a poor beggar on the side of the road when he was still a soldier.

Without hesitation, St. Martin cut his cloak in half and gave it to the beggar.

That night, St. Martin had a dream of Jesus wearing his cloak. In one version of the story, he woke up and his cloak was restored whole.
