The V-22 Osprey is an American multirole tiltrotor aircraft developed by Bell and Boeing in the late 1980s.
The V-22 is a tiltrotor aircraft—an aircraft capable of flying both as a helicopter and as an airplane, transitioning between modes by changing the powerplant configuration (rotating the rotors). This allows it to combine the maneuverability and vertical flight capabilities of helicopters with the range, altitude, and speed of airplanes.
The tiltrotor was developed in the 1980s to meet the US military's need for a transport aircraft capable of helicopter flight but with the speed and range of an airplane. The project's lead developer was Bell, which had been developing this technology since the 1950s and completed two projects: the XV-3 and XV-15.
The V-22 program became one of the most groundbreaking in the industry, yielding both outstanding results and serious challenges related to aircraft cost, operation, and safety. To date, more than 400 tiltrotor aircraft have been built, serving with various branches of the US Armed Forces, as well as the Japan Self-Defense Forces.
The V-22 is currently the first and only production model of this type of aircraft. However, several other military and civilian projects, conceptually similar to the V-22, are already in various stages of development.
