Lockheed F-104: The Price of Leadership
The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is a supersonic fighter jet developed by Lockheed in the mid-1950s. It was the world's first production aircraft capable of breaking the Mach 2 barrier.
The F-104 was developed based on the experience of the Korean War of the 1950s, with the ultimate goal of achieving maximum speeds and altitudes. To achieve these parameters, the design and all aspects of the aircraft were optimized, making it a record-breaker.
The F-104 became popular in the export market, with most fighters being produced under license outside the United States.
However, the Starfighter's advances in speed and altitude performance came at the cost of significantly degrading other characteristics, leading to operational difficulties, numerous accidents, and disasters.
