The Exploding Crotch Bowl! - Woodturning Linden/Lime
Hello and welcome! In this video I use a woodturning lathe to make an exploding bowl from Lime wood (Linden).
As the title suggest, all didn't go to plan with this piece, the age old problem of 'one last cut'. I had a catch in a particularly soft spot in the bottom of the piece causing it to break in half. Sadly the camera cut out a few minutes prior to this (a shame as it would have made the end of year bloopers reel!) but I have included a dramatic recreation of the break.
This brings up an issue of safety, woodturning can be very dangerous.
I knew this piece had faults running through so I was using on one of the slowest speeds while also standing well out of the firing line should it let go. Your standing position while turning is very important because we can't always predict what the wood will do. Don't get in it's way and always wear a decent, impact rated face shield.
I fixed the two halves back to with dowel pins and wood glue and was tempted to fill the void with resin but after pondering it for a day or two decided the crack and fix should be left visible.
Once glued the bowl was remounted to the lathe only for a secure point to sand from but I didn't spin it up for obvious reasons. Finally, off camera, I removed the tenon with a pull saw and tidied up with a belt sander.
Finished in Flaxseed oil (Linseed).
