You might think we could categorize our effects the same way we categorized our instruments. In theory it’s possible but in practice it causes far too many conflicts. Again, it’s up to you. Feel free to categorize your effects or instruments in whatever way makes the most sense to you.
In my opinion effects categorization should be broken up based on the fundamental attributes of sound (aka the ways we describe a sound). For example a compressor automatically makes things quieter. What attribute of sound is that? Loudness or Dynamics. An EQ adjusts the balances of frequencies in a sound so obviously that effect falls into the frequency category.
Throughout these videos we’ll be categorizing all of our effects and explaining the reasons why certain effects fall in certain categories.
