Christians, You're Telling on Yourselves
Christians. I know you mean well. I know many of you look at me and people like me, that is those who have deconverted from Christianity especially as in my case because of severe religious trauma — you look at me as a damaged project to fix. You want to correct my errant thinking and perspectives, and get me on the “right” path, likely because you’re empathetic, which is good. And you’re convinced that your view — even though it may directly conflict with and differ greatly from the views other Christians hold — is the right and best view. You’ve figured it all out, you’ve got the inside track to the Holy Spirit, you have the “truth” cornered, and you’re excited to share with me your interpretation of things because you believe it will help me and convince me of how wrong and misguided I am. You want to break through to correct me, to show me a good and glorious way of approaching scripture and God, because I’m blind to see it, or I’m doing it wrong, or I’m taking things way out of context, or I’m not relying on context enough, or I’m relying too much on my own cognitive filters to understand God’s word, and that’s dangerous, or that I haven’t heard the “true” Gospel, and with this one little tweak I’ll get to the place you are. The veil would be lifted. If only I would see things as you do! If only I would let go of the childhood trauma God allowed in my life, I’d come around to see God only as compassion and love.
