Christians Defend An Abuser

I’m going to keep beating the same drum, because the more videos I make about religious trauma, the more it’s clear to me that Christians either don’t know what it really is, or they have a totally misinformed idea about it, and thus don’t accept it as true and real. And as a result, they disregard or reject outright the qualitative and quantitative scholarly research and literature on religious trauma, as well as the sociological and psychological implications, and the testimonies about it. But yet they pay great homage to any scholarly literature or personal testimonies that support and validate their beliefs. And I get it; Christians can’t acknowledge that their God, Bible and religion actually cause psychological harm to many Christians who eventually deconvert. To Chrisitians, Christianity should reduce or eliminate altogether psychological harm for Christians because Christianity is founded on a God of love, mercy, grace and forgiveness. To Christians, that god and the Bible cause religious trauma is implausible and creates cognitive dissonance. So Christians push back on me and people like me with the predictable cherry-picked Bible verses that defend their IDEA of God, or what they want their God to be, and they cough up their excuses, the top of which is that I and others like me couldn’t have ever been real Christians to begin with, or that we were following a false gospel. Those are easy and shallow responses. They’re thought-terminating and dismissive. They’re lazy and dishonest. They are not constructive. No non-Christian experiences religious trauma from Christianity, plain and simple. And as long as Christians keep beating that same drum, and making those same excuses, I’m sad to say, I’m not sure we’re going to make the progress I‘m after.

Christians, what you do to people who claim they are suffering from religious trauma, people like me, is you use scripture to defend your God, my abuser, and try to woo us back to this maniacal god of love. You blame us. You fault us. You criticize us. You gaslight us. You try to bring us back to the situation that caused the abuse and trauma in the first place.

To stand at the side of the abuser and claim it’s impossible for them to have abused, means that you are an accomplice, a defender of the abuser, and are complicit to the abuse.
