Sacrifice or Divine Pardon: Trauma Born from Religious Imagery

With Easter having just passed, this got me thinking about the crucifixion, and, of course, religious trauma, which is what this channel is all about. I’m so curious to see how you guys are going to react to this one. Let me know if I’m out on an island with my thoughts. I know Christians will think I am, that’s a given. I mean you agnostics and atheists, you who are deconstructing or newly deconverted, tell me in the comments your experience.

→ Discusses how repeated exposure to violent Christian imagery (especially crucifixion scenes) can instill deep shame, chronic anxiety, and an early sense of personal unworthiness, particularly in sensitive or previously traumatized individuals.

📚 Pasquale, Teresa B. (2015). Sacred Wounds: A Path to Healing from Spiritual Trauma. → Focuses on how vivid, fear-inducing religious images (e.g., Christ's bleeding body, hellfire) become "mental imprints" that contribute to trauma-like symptoms, especially in children exposed at young ages.

Springer, Cham. → When an individual’s belief system is unable to make sense of the trauma or assist the individual in finding an integrated narrative, then the trauma can trigger a newfound questions about the existence of God and meaning in life. Spiritual struggle can result in greater levels of PTSD symptoms and complications on the path to recovery. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-086...
