"Jerry," I smile and sink back into my chair. "You scared me."
"That's what I'm good at," he smiles back and hands me my drink. "Here's your frap."
"Thanks." I take it and give him a five. "Keep the change." He smiles thankfully and leaves. I turn back to the fire and lift the cup to my lips. I tilt it back and take a big gulp. Wow! This is amazing! I take another big gulp and sink deeper into my chair. Ah, this is the life.
"Excuse me." I look up again to see a guy who's about average height, with fairly tanned skin, and short dark brown hair wearing a white v-neck t-shirt with a loose grey jacket, faded blue jeans, and black converse standing over me. "Is anyone sitting here?"
I shake my head lightly, "nope." He smiles and sits down in the gold and brown chair opposite me while I take a sip of my drink. "So," I sigh. "Nice weather we're having."
"Yeah, absolutely gorgeous." I chuckle lightly at his sarcasm. The heavy amounts of rain and wind we've been getting today are pretty far from gorgeous. We sit there sipping our drinks and twiddling our thumbs as a few minutes of silence tick by. "So," he sighs after a while. "You know Jerry?"
"Sort of, he's here every time I come in so he knows what I get."
"And what's that?" I look over at the guy. He's turned so his attention is on me instead of the fire.
"A peppermint mocha frappuccino."
"Oh." He gestures at my cup. "My eyesight's a little off, but I'm pretty sure that's not a peppermint mocha."
"It's not," I smile and hold up my cup, sort of displaying it. "It's a double chocolaty chip."
"Sounds delicious."
"It is," I say with a smile and take another big gulp. "What about you?"
"It's nothing special," he shrugs and holds up his cup. "Just a black coffee."
"Hey, don't diss the coffee."
He laughs lightly, almost choking on his drink. He holds up his cup and puts his other hand over his heart. "I'm sorry coffee." We laugh lightly and make fun of his coffee for a few more minutes before he leans forward and holds out his right hand. "I'm Joe by the way."
"Demi," I smile and shake his hand. We sit back in our seats and I turn to the fire.
"How long have you been in New York Demi?"
"A month."
"What brought you here?"
"Change," I sigh. "I needed something new."
"Interesting," Joe slumps back in his chair. "Where'd you move here from?"
"Vermont."
"Was it not good enough?"
"No, it was great. I just," my words catch in my throat.
"What?"
I take a deep breath and turn to Joe. "I just needed to get away."
"Oh," he sighs. "I think I get it now."
"Yeah." I turn back to the fire and take another huge gulp of my frap. "What about you? How long have you been here?"
"Almost seven years."
"Wow, what do you do?"
"I've got a recording studio not far from here."
"Have you produced any big chart toppers?" I look back at Joe and he smiles.
"A few."
"Any I've heard of?"
"Probably," he chuckles lightly. "Speaking of work, I gotta get back." He stands to leave. "It was nice meeting you Demi..."
"Lovato," I smile and lift my cup to my lips, taking another gulp. "You too Joe..."
"Jonas."
My delicious double chocolaty chip frappuccino is spewing out of my mouth before I can stop it.
