"C'mon, me and you both know Joe so well," Selena said from across the room. "He won't freak out too much."
Demi couldn't bring herself to say anything. Her mind was all over the place and she couldnt think straight. Too many things occupied her at once; graduation, college, Joe, and now this baby in her. It was all too much and it was all happening way too quickly for her to be able to keep up. It was one week before graduation and all she'd been trying to do for the past few days was prepare for that big day and study as much as she could for her final exams. She's been stressed and all she wanted to do was curl up in bed and just sleep.
"You're right. I mean, whats the worse that could happen?" Demi says, but it only came out as a whisper. She swallowed the lump in her throat and got off the bed, stumbing over to her desk where the pregnancy test was laying. She stares down at it once again as tears had threatened to fall from her face. She feels Selena's presence behind her.
"Demi. It'll be okay," she encourages.
"How is it going to be okay? I'm pregnant, graduation is near, I can never get to college now. Joe is going to be furious and my parents will be pissed!"
Selena sighs and shurgs. "Just talk it out with them, they'll all understand. You and Joe can talk about your options. You can make this work," she tells Demi.
Demi sighs and walks past Selena as her phone had started to ring. "Hello?" Demi says with a shakey voice. "Oh.. yeah hey, Joe.. No, I'm fine.. Nothing's wrong. I'm just with Selena and--... yeah.. yeah, that sounds good. I, uhh, actually have something to tell you as well. Pick me up at 6?... Sounds like a date. Alright buh bye." Demi shuts her phone and throws it on her bed.
Selena turns to her and says, "So?"
"We're going out for a movie tonight. He says he's got something to talk to me about."
After the movie was over, Joe and Demi were now sitting in Joe's car, parked in front of the beach. Demi had been nervous all night and Joe seemed to notice. He rolls down the windows to let the cool air drift in and then took Demi's hand from across the gearshift.
"So whats up?" he asks her, rubbing the top of her hand with his thumb gently.
Demi turns to look at Joe. "I dont know.. you still havent told me your news yet," she says, faking a smile.
Joe sighs. "I can see that something is on your mind."
Demi shifts in her seat and hugs her arms to herself, pulling away from Joe.
"Its just graduation and all the exams next week. I've just been stressed, thats all," she answers.
Joe looks at her, puzzled. "You sure? I'm pretty sure there's something else bugging you."
"Nope.. so what was it that you wanted to tell me?" she says quickly, trying to change the subject.
At this, Joe immediately brightened up again. "So I got a letter in the mail today from this photography school and they've seen my work and are giving me a full scholarship for 4 entire years! Everything is paid for, I just think that I really should take this offer. Its a really great opportunity but before I jump at it, I really wanted your say and see what you thought first."
Demi took one look at Joe and could automatically see the desire in his eyes. He really wanted this and the only thing holding him back.. was her.
"W-why do you need my say? Why does it matter anyway?" she asks, her voice cracking a bit.
"Because I love you and I wanted your honest opinion. I mean, if you don't want me to go, you can say so," he says.
"Now why would I say that? Of course you should go! I dont want to be holding you back from what is your dream." As she said this, she looked out the car window at the night sky as tears started to cloud her eyes. They've known each other since they were in diapers and have been dating for almost 3 years now. They've been through thick and thin together.
She bites her bottom lip and forces the words out, "Where is the school at?"
There was a pause before Joe finally answered. "Its in London.." Another pause. Demi took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. Joe continues, "But I mean, I'm sure we'll be just fine. I mean, there's the phone and the internet and of course, you can come visit and I could go home once in a while, since you're staying here. I'm willing to make it work, if you are."
It took a while but when Demi finally looks at Joe, she just nods and smiles through her tears. "Yeah. It'll work," she whispers, weak.
"Why are you crying?"he asks her, leaning over to swipe a tear.
She sighs. "I guess reality just hit me. It wont ever be the same, huh? We're all growing up so quick and its scaring the hell out of me," Demi tells him because, obviously, she wasnt going to tell him the truth.
"Oh.. well I guess you're right." He sighs and starts up the car again. "We
just have to take it one day at a time."
Demi stares out the window, trying to calm herself as Joe drove through the night streets.
